The American Golf Adventure Golf National Pairs Championship Final

Competing in the American Golf Adventure Golf National Pairs Championship Final at The Belfry.

It was superb to qualify for and compete in the first American Golf Adventure Golf National Pairs Championship Final held at The Belfry on Friday 8th September. The tournament will be broadcast on Sky Sports Golf later this year.

Peter and I qualified for the American Golf Adventure Golf National Pairs Championship Final by winning the Welsh Regional Qualifier at Clays Golf Centre in April.

The American Golf Adventure Golf National Pairs Championship Final was played over four rounds - two qualifying rounds of strokeplay, followed by a matchplay semi-final and a matchplay final. Peter and I played well as a team and qualified for the semi-final in second place after rounds of 35 and 34 on the 12-hole Ryder Legends Mini Golf course. We were victorious in our semi-final against the Watford qualifiers Simon and Jake Whitby, but unfortunately lost 3&2 in the final against Bristol qualifiers Simon Lee and Steve Gerrish.

Earlier this year the American Golf Adventure Golf Championship Regional Qualifying competitions were held at various American Golf centres in England, Scotland and Wales, with the winners of each moving on to the final on the Ryder Legends miniature golf course at The Belfry.

The Adventure Golf tournament was a pairs format and open to all golfers and non-golfers alike. Qualifying took place in March and April at Great Western Golf Clydebank, World of Golf Croydon, Top Golf Watford, Bristol Golf Centre, Trent Lock in Long Eaton and Clays Farm Golf Centre in Wrexham.

The American Golf tournament finals at The Belfry brought together qualifiers from eight different golf formats including 9-Hole pairs and individual, Family, Scratch, Ladies, Senior, Par-3 and Adventure Golf. The American Golf programmes will be on Sky Sports during October and November.

Minigolf Doubles Record Update - September 2014

Update of my career minigolf doubles record following the 2014 BMGA British Doubles Championship held at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge.

Minigolf Doubles Career Record (click to englarge)

Minigolf Doubles Career Record of Richard Gottfried

My first minigolf doubles match was on the 17 May 2008, when I teamed with Emily in a loss to the 'Casual Force' combo of Sean Homer and Marion Homer at the 2008 BMGA British Doubles Championship in Warwick.

Since then I've played 75 matches, with 38 wins, 6 draws and 31 losses. In those 75 matches I've had a total of 21 playing partners - the latest being John 'Ted' McIver, who I teamed up with in a losing effort to Emily and my former team-mate Scott 'Donkey Gringo' Lancley.

Minigolf Report from Dorridge

Results from the Midlands Open competition and BMGA British Doubles Championships held at the Four Ashes Golf Centre.

Luton Minigolfers Richard and Emily Gottfried competed in two Minigolf tournaments at the 12-hole course at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge, Solihull on the 6th and 7th September.

In the Midlands Open competition held on Saturday Emily finished in 17th place overall in the 29 player field. Richard was 19th.

Emily scored a four-round total of 98(+2) with rounds of 26, 24, 24 and 24.

Richard scored a total of 100(+4) after rounds of 25, 24, 25 and 26.

On Sunday the pair teamed-up for the first time since 2008 to take on thirteen other duos in the BMGA British Doubles Championship. After six rounds of play the team finished in 6th place.

A score of 22(-2) in the first qualifying round saw them top the rankings. This was followed up with a 24(par) to finish 5th in the preliminary classification round.

In the seeded matchplay knockout stages they were drawn against the London pair of Max Plaice and Becky Statham and would go on to win 3&2.

In the quarter-finals the duo were defeated 3&2 by Margate’s Scott Lancley and Hastings’ John ‘Ted’ McIver.

The team bounced back in the classification match against Cambridge’s James Rutherford and Canterbury’s Marc Chapman with Emily scoring holes-in-one on four of the six holes she played and Richard acing the final hole for a 1up victory.

The pair were defeated by Brechin’s Freddie Blackburn-Shaw and London’s Will Donnelly in the match for 5th place, with Donnelly scoring a hole-in-one at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off.

Commenting after the weekend’s events Emily said “I was really pleased with my 17th place finish in the Midlands Open. I felt that I played well, scoring quite a few aces, however I was let down by my performance on one particularly tricky hole. I carried that level of performance over into the Doubles on the second day of competition, achieving consistent aces through the day. Richard and I were a great team, helping and motivating each other and I was pleased with sixth place.”

Richard said “Emily played well all weekend and was a great partner in the British Doubles, scoring a huge amount of aces and we picked up some good wins and a great first round score.”

Michael Smith of Oxford won the Midlands Open, with Birmingham’s Chris Harding teaming with Smith to win the BMGA British Doubles Championship.

Minigolf Report – Midlands Open & BMGA British Doubles Championships

Luton Minigolfer Richard Gottfried was in action over the weekend as he competed in two tournaments at the 12-hole Minigolf Course at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge, Solihull.

First up was the Midlands Open competition held on Saturday 8th September.

Richard finished in tied tenth place in the 34-player field with a score of 94(-2) following rounds of 22, 23, 26 and 23. The four-round competition was won by the reigning World Crazy Golf Champion, Oxford’s Michael Smith with a score of 78(-18).

BMGA British Doubles Championships

The 2012 BMGA British Doubles Championships were held on Sunday 9th September. Richard teamed with Margate’s Scott Lancley for the second year in a row. The team finished in seventh place overall in the 16-team competition.

Commenting on the weekend’s events Richard said “The Minigolf course at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge is one of my favourite courses and always presents a great challenge. I’m pleased with achieving another pair of top ten finishes on the BMGA Tour in two very competitive fields. It was a pleasure to once again team with Scott Lancley in our attempt to win the British Doubles, unfortunately we lost our quarter final match against the eventual champions, but we’ll have another crack at the titles next year.”

In the BMGA British Doubles Championships each of the competing 16 teams played in a round robin group qualifying stage, before moving on to a knockout stage to determine the final rankings.

Richard and Scott were second in their group with two wins and a draw, after defeating Marina Breeden and Adam Breeden, Alex Pragnell and Alastair Shaw and tying with Michael Smith and James Rutherford. This meant they qualified for the play-off matches for positions 1-8.

In the quarter final match against Ted McIver and Nick Chitty they were handed their first loss and entered the pool for positions 5-8. McIver and Chitty were the eventual champions, defeating the duo of Seth Thomas and Chris Smith in the final. Gottfried and Lancley lost their next classification match against Marion Homer and Sean Homer, but were victorious in their match against Oliver Florence and Richard Skeggs in the play-off for 7th/8th place.

Finally Playing the Camden Crazy Golf Course

A Minigolf re-visit - this time with a Putter and Minigolf Balls!

After competing in The Brewmaster's Open at the Camden Town Brewery we still had an appetite for some more Minigolf and as Alan 'Stormin' Norman had brought his kitbag along it meant we were able to play the Crazy Golf course at Clarence Wayon the Castlehaven Estate in Camden, London!

I've been to the course a number of times before and only seen people on it a couple of times.

We decided that in our contest we'd have a Doubles Match between me and Simon 'Practice' Hall - as the Luton Minigolf Club - versus Seth 'Clockwork Orange' Thomas and Alan 'Stormin' Norman - the London Minigolfers.

To decide which team would tee-off first the team captains had a game of Rock Paper Scissors - I won!!!

The Minigolfers and the Minigolf Putter. From l-r Simon 'Practice' Hall, 'Squire' Richard Gottfried, Alan 'Stormin' Norman, Seth 'Clockwork Orange' Thomas

Using Alan's Minigolf Putter and one ball that was accurately 'tested'* on hole one I teed-off and scored a two. Simon stepped up and also scored a two. The Thomas-Norman tandem also scored four as a team to tie the hole.

* the practice involved throwing a Ravensburg Minigolf Ball down the lane of hole one - it went in for an ace!!!

Alan 'Stormin' Norman in action

The London Minigolfers took the lead on hole two, scoring a four, with me and Simon scoring a five. The team went two-up at the fourth hole, before Simon and I won back a hole at the fifth.

Playing the Cannon Hole

With our team needing to win the hole at the eighth to keep the match alive our team scored a five, following Seth's hole-in-one and Alan's two for their team score of three. I actually managed to get the ball in the hole with my tee-shot, unfortunately it wasn't the first shot! See the 'Caption competition' photo below.

Minigolf Caption Contest!

By playing the course it became the 303rd played on the Crazy World of Minigolf Tour.

Minigolf Report – Weymouth Open 2011

Richard runner-up in Individual Competition and winner, with Chris Harding, in Team Tournament

Luton Minigolfers Richard and Emily Gottfried were in action at the fourth-annual Weymouth Open competition at the 18-hole Pirate Adventure Golf course at the Sea Life Centre at Lodmoor Country Park on Sunday 9th October. Competing in a 13 player field Richard was the runner-up in the Weymouth Open individual tournament. Emily finished in tied-eighth place.

In the two round tournament Richard scored a total of 81(+9) after rounds of 42 and 39. Emily had a total of 95(+23) after rounds of 48 and 47. The winner was Oxford’s Michael Smith who retained the title with a score of 78(+6).

In the second competition of the day Richard teamed with Birmingham’s Chris Harding to compete in the first-ever Weymouth Open Team Tournament. In the combined score doubles event the pair won with a total of 80(+8) with both players hitting rounds of 40. Emily and her partner Chris Smith were runners-up with a team score of 82, with Emily scoring 42 and Chris Smith a 40.

Richard said “The Pirate Adventure Golf course in Weymouth is one of the hardest courses we play on the BMGA Tour but I always enjoy the challenge it presents. I’ve now been runner-up up here twice, as well as winning the event in 2008. I’m very pleased to have added the Weymouth Open Team Championship title to my honours and Chris Harding was a great partner to have in the event.”

Emily said “The doubles competition was great fun. Chris Smith was a good partner to have and we put up a good fight for the Team Title. I felt I played a little under-par, and so let the team down, as we were only two shots away from a play-off for the trophy, and I made a couple of silly putting errors. Hopefully the title will be ours next year!”

Minigolf Doubles Match - Great Britain Internationals vs. Kosovo National Minigolf Team

During the practice days for the inaugural WMF World Adventure Golf Masters tournament in Hastings I got to meet the Kosovan National Minigolf Team, comprised of Lavdim Zylfiu and Arben Alija, at the course. The tournament was the first International minigolf event for the players, and indeed Kosovo.

Over the two tournament days I was grouped with Arben, who scored a very impressive and course record breaking round of 27(-9) in his fourth round of the tournament.

However, prior to the tournament proper teeing-off, me and fellow Great Britain International Minigolfer Alan 'Stormin' Norman challenged the Kosovan Duo to an 18-hole Doubles Strokeplay International Friendly on the new Pirate Adventure Golf Course. The challenge was accepted.

In our third match as a Doubles Team, Alan and I managed to score 73(+1) as a pair, with Alan storming to an impressive 32(-4), while I was obviously holding back my best play until the tourrnament itself, as I scored a sorry 41(+5). Lavdim and Arben both scored 38(+2) for a team total of 76(+4) to just miss out on the win.

I'm looking forward to a minigolf rematch with them in the future!

Gottfried & Florence to compete in The Green Doubles Minigolf Tournament

A new minigolf team will be created this weekend, as Luton's 'Squire' Richard Gottfried and Walton-on-Thames' Oliver 'The Machine' Florence will be teaming-up for the first time at The Green Doubles Minigolf Tournament, in Hither Green on Sunday.

The BMGA Tour Professionals are both Great Britain International Minigolfers, and keen minigolf bloggers. However, the GMGC Green Doubles Tournament will be the first-time the pair have teamed together. To date, Richard has teamed with ten other playing partners.

Richard's last minigolf doubles match was on the 1st August 2010, as he and Emily 'Coach' Gottfried faced the Bangor Minigolf Club in a losing effort in the 126-hole Northern Ireland Belfast Bangor Antrim & Larne Invitational Tournament. The Luton Wanderers Minigolf Club were due to meet the Portsmouth & Southsea Crazy Golf (Gold) Club on the 29th December 2010, however the Adventure Golf course was closed, so the result of the Southsea Pirate Masters was decided by a coin-toss.

Richard Gottfried's Minigolf Doubles Career Record - at 22/02/2011 (last match 29/12/2010).
